I thoroughly enjoyed Dead Brides, however, I think I enjoyed Jeremy Reed's preface even more. He has written a wonderful summary of Poe's sad life and he has analysed The Fall of the House of Usher so splendidly that it is almost a mandatory accompaniment to the story. Reed writes as beautifully as Poe himself does and he turns a simple biography into a piece of literature. Poe's life, his small family consisting of his young bride and her mother (Poe's aunt), their innumerable moves and abject poverty makes a compelling story on its own.
