A very entertaining novel. Hemingway does a great job in making you feel as if you were in Northern Italy during the War. It was interesting, too, that the main character was not a "soldier" in the typical sense. Instead, he is an American volunteer ambulance driver serving in the Italian Army. For several reasons, this brings an added flavor to the story. I liked FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS slightly better than this book, but I think they are both incredible novels--I would recommend both, without hesitation.
