I am a literature major and Grimms'fairy tales are the best ever! They are scary, and are not sanatized like the contemporary Disney versions are.

When you go to a Disney movie of Cinderella, you don't see the step-sisters getting what they deserve for being so mean to poor Cinderella, while in Grimms' ASCHENPUTTEL the stepsisters get their eyes gorged out and their toes and heels cut off. The Disney version takes the meaning out the fairy tale. Instead of kids thinking that if they are mean, they will be punished, they are more likely to identify with the pretty glass slippers and the fairy god mother who say, "Bibbedy-bobbedy boop!" Contemporary fairy tales do not teach our children anything, whereas Grimms'versions do. Contemporary fairy tales only serve as a source of entertainment for children. Children need to be exposed to the dark and the sunny side of things. Growing up with a one-sided sunny view of things will only serve to teach children that life will always turn out okay, when everyone knows that is not true!
