The Rain King brilliantly wrenches the gut of the reader through and through. It is a tale of a man in search of an answer to a question even he fails to comprehend. The story follows his lifelong escapade to reveal this deep desire hidden even from him. Will Henderson overcome his deep seeded selfishness? Will he come to terms with his lifelong depression? Will he survive the wilds of Africa and will Africa survive a visit from Henderson? More importantly, this book touches on many of life’s staples: happiness, money, family and inner peace. Yet, these questions are only the surface of what this subtle but deeply meaningful work begs its readers to address. Henderson unhinges the questions that every person should be asking and exploits the deep harm of living a life for selfish purposes. It is a work that should be read by all.
