March Atlantic Monthly review of Ian McEwan's latest
Posted by len fehskens on 19/2/2002, 16:01:08
There's a longish review in the latest (March 2002) issue of The Atlantic Monthly of Ian McEwan's latest book, Atonement.
There are also several other really interesting articles, including one about salt.

There is a review of McEwan's Atonement in October issue of Literary Review and in this month's issue there is a review of a book on "salt". I am wondering if Lit.Rev. and Atl.Mon. are running one another's topics or if they are related.
In any case, the review of Atonement that I read was favorable, and the review of the "salt" book was humourously degrading.
The salt book is "Salt: A World History" by Mark Kurlansky (author of a previous book called "Cod" ), in case anyone wants to buy it. It seems to me that it is one of those books that people find in a discount bin and buy it as a gift for someone they don't like that much ;-)
McEwan's Atonement; I am intrigued. After Black Dogs, there is still "A Child in Time" that comes higly recommended and is on my list. So after those two, I will try to make time for Atonement.

The Atlantic Monthly was a bit more favorable in its mention of this book. I have a copy on order.

Atonement is high on my list, too. The review in my newspaper was glowing. I would have proposed it for our book discussions if it had been out in paperback, but so far it is only available in hardback: unnecessarily expensive and too bulky for carrying with me to read on the bus.
PS McEwan's Enduring Love is excellent as well.
