Monthly Book Club

Posted by Chris on 23/8/2001, 18:22:45

Per Lale's wonderful suggestion that we begin a monthly book discussion, I've one suggestion as to our

method of choosing books. While an ideal method would be, eventually, to put forth suggested titles and

subsequently vote on them, our presently limited number of likely participants makes voting an inviable option.

Instead, I propose that each of us (and I understand that there are four of us likely to participate in this first

month) rotate the choosing responsibility. We could arrainge this rotation alphabetically, randomly, or at Lale's

(since she is our host) discretion.

Any thoughts?

I think alphabetically would work fine. There is at least 6 of us, so far. Since I picked the first book, I would be

excluded from the first round. Alphabetically, next person to pick a book would be Anna, and then Chris, and

then Dave, Guillermo and Todd. Hopefully by the next round we'll have more people so we can vote on the

suggested books. Does that sound good to everyone?

We should still suggest books for others to consider. And also, maybe we can pay attention to alternating

countries, themes or periods.

Here are some of my suggesstions:

- Jeffrey Lent - In The Fall (I once read a Newsweek article about this book. The agents and publishers were

very excited about it. They thought this was going to be one of those great books. However, later on, I never

heard anyone talk about it ever again, maybe it didn't turn out to be popular with the North American readers)

- Zadie Smith - White Teeth (Again in Newsweek, I read a raving review of this book.)

- George Eliot - Middlemarch (Something old)

- Nadine Gordimer - Conversationist (Something from South Africa)

- Heinrich Boll - The Bread of Those Early Years

More later.
