Monthly "read and discuss": next book to read
Posted by Anna van Gelderen on 17/9/2001, 8:31:54
Dear everybody who wants to join in our discussions,
Lale assigned me the heavy resposibility of picking our next book. After a lot of pondering (so many good books to choose from) I finally decided to keep it simple and to choose one of the novels Lale suggested: Jeffrey Lent's In the Fall. I still have to buy the book, but after having seen the reviews on Amazon I am looking forward to reading it.

Anna, I am very excited about reading this book. I read a lot about it. I am very curious.
By the time it is your turn again, I am sure you will be able to find us a book by an author who is Dutch from bone marrow to the ends of his/her hair. You have a few months to think about it ;-)

Anna: I have a feeling that In The Fall is an excellent choice... I've had a look at the book in the store. I just started a 700 page book though, and now I'm so into it that I'll have to finish it first... so I may be tardy on this new start! So, all you other readers... please don't be too speedy O.K.? I'm right now knee deep into Leon Uris.
And by the way, I agree with you, I also enjoyed reading Duddy. It makes me want to read other works by Richler.

I, too, have just started on a big fat other book and besides that it will be at least a week before
my copy of In the Fall arrives from the UK, so I will have to take my time as well. And yes, I am definitely going to read more of Mordecai Richler and recommend him to my friends.

I'm happy to hear that Dava and Anna will be taking our next book slow because they've begun reading enormous books. I too am reading a monster (War and Peace), so the slower pace sounds just about perfect to me.

So then, this must be a good time for me to start tackling that huge Ulysses that has been staring at me from the shelf for years now.
Theoretically, In The Fall is the book of October.
I wish you all undisturbed readings.

Great! Beacuse before taking on Duddy I was reading The Iliad. I had read it as a child in an abridged form, but now I wanted to read the whole thing. I expected a messy, complicated and somehow boring thing, but boy! it's full of battles, fights, cruelty, sex, treason, strange stories and all, all of our human passions. I woulod like to discuss it with anyone who has read it in its entirety. The times when the heroes get dressed for battle are gruesome.
Now, going back to the monthly discussion reading, I am halfway through Duddy and enjoying it. I live in Mexico, and so I don't know how easy it will be to find the new book. But I'll get it and read it. Saludos desde Mexico.

I hope all you guys finished your thick books, 'cause I'm starting to read my IN THE FALL now. My thick book was Ulysses which didn't go very well and I had to "put it aside for the time being". Then I read Camus' The Fall. Brilliant as Camus usually is. So now I am starting with Jeffrey Lent.
