Is there a Sigourney in Great Gatsby?
Posted by Lale on 12/5/2001, 17:21:44
We just watched an interview with Sigourney Weaver on television. She said that her real name was Suzy and that she didn't like it because it was too short. She said that she picked the name Sigourney out of Great Gatsby which she was reading at the time. I remember Daisy and Jordan from The Great Gatsby but not Sigourney. A quick page flapping didn't reveal any Sigourneys either. Does anyone remember? Maybe she made it up? I am tempted to read the whole thing again just to find out, but when there are so many books that are not yet read even once...

you may find a very interesting non-answer to your sigourney question at http://catholiceducation.org/articles/arts/al0027.html. the article is interesting though it does not answer your question explicitly. i think that ms.weaver was either careless in her research while constructing her faux biography, or she was ignorantly misquoted. anyhow, enjoy the article.

Good Golly Ms. Holly, you are right. I checked out the site and read portions of that long article. As it turns out Sigourney Weaver probably meant to say This Side of Paradise, and not Great Gatsby.
This quote is from the article you gave the pointer to: "...This Side of Paradise is dedicated, in fact, to Sigourney Fay, the worldly priest who stood for a time as spiritual (and surrogate) father to the author..." I agree, she must have not been very careful while constructing her faux and "cool sounding" biography. By the way, she was not< misquoted, it was she, herself who said "The Great Gatsby".
