Books of November and December
Posted by Lale on 31/10/2001, 11:41:09
Just a quick note to announce the books we will be reading in November and December:
November's book: William Somerset Maugham's "The Razor's Edge" - Picked by Dave.
December's book: Louis Couperus' "The Hidden Force" - Picked by Chris.
I wish all of us peaceful reading times and not so peaceful (i.e. heated) discussions.

Another book to consider in the future:
Bernhard Schlink's "The Reader", and his latest publication, a collection of stories, "Flights of Love".

Hi Lale, Only read this message today. I read The Reader two years ago in a Dutch
translation. It is a deceptively simple book, very much worthwhile reading and posing some
interesting questions (which is what a good book should do - personally I find the right
questions far more valuable than the "right" answers).

I just read your reply. I am happy to hear that it is worth reading. My only reservation was that it was featured on Oprah's book club. I don't know whether or not you know who Oprah is but here is a quick introduction: she hosts a daytime talk show, that should be enough information for now ;-) A couple of years ago she started a book club on her show and the books she picks become immediate best sellers. I am self-conscious enough of associated stigma that I try to avoid the book that has a "Oprah Book Club" sticker on it. The idea being, if she was so smart why is she on television interviewing "celebrities"?
I am glad to hear that you recommend this book. I was intrigued when I read the review in Newsweek.
Oh, indeed. The right question may cause a life long pondering. You may never get the right answer but the effort may be just as valuable (or fun). Remember Larry?
