To The Lighthouse / Dinner table

Posted by Lale on 22/6/2001, 21:01:02

Two things happened today:

1. I had ordered Roger Brown's Words & Things and Steven

Pinker's Words & Rules from WHSMITH in the UK, and they sent me

two copies of Words & Things and no copies of Words & Rules. I

wrote and offered to send the extra copy of the duplicate book

back to them. Today, I received a reply saying "please do keep it,

and we will send you the missing book immediately." So, now I

have an extra copy of Brown's Words and Things to give to a

friend.

2. Today I finished reading Virginia Woolf's To The Lighthouse.

How can you combine the two?

While reading the first part of To The Lighthouse, I had tried to

place the household and the guests at their seating intended by Ms

Woolf and I think I finally got it right.

I want to ask readers of this book to do the same. The first person

who credibly describes the dinner table seating (and God knows,

we spent a long time at that table) will get the extra book from

whsmith who messed up but gracefully offered to sort it all out.
