1. Saul Bellow was born in Lachine near Montreal, Canada. His parents had emigrated in 1913 from Russia to Montreal. When Bellow was nine years old they moved to Chicago.
2. Joseph Brodsky was born in Leningrad (now Saint Peterburg). He was exiled from the Soviet Union in 1972. Thereafter, he lived in the United States and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1977.
3. Henry James was a naturalized English citizen in the last two years of his life. He died in London.
4. Vladimir Nabokov was born in Russia. He left Russia in 1919, when he was 20 years of age. In 1945, he became a US citizen.
5. Gore Vidal is most famous with his American Chronicle Series (Lincoln / Burr / 1876 / Washington D.C. / Empire / Hollywood / The Golden Age / The American Precidency) that are written in the form of historical fiction. Since readliterature.com focuses mostly on literary fiction, and some of these books read as political essays, I am going to keep them off the main list for now. However, if you care about these books enough to write reviews, then I will gladly move them up and place them with Vidal's other books. Write a review for a Vidal historical fiction!
